New Members Welcome

The 2022 Club Championships were held on Sunday May 1st and Sunday May 15th. A record 35 entrants went at it over the four events (Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles), in what was our best Club Championships yet!

Tanya Parker/Maryann Pittard (1) def. Glenice Carr/Lois Booth (2) 6-4 6-3, May 15th 10:00am. Court 2 (Richard Carr Court)

This had the makings of a tight match on paper, and it certainly panned out that way for a fair portion of the contest. Tanya and Maryann took the first set which was a long one, after many long rallies. The second set was a quicker one, but not before club stalwarts Glenice and Lois made a mini comeback after being down 4-0 and game point. Ultimately Tanya and Maryann were too consistent for longer. Congratulations to the two of you on your first title.

Connor Hipwell (1) def. Chris Preston (2) 6-4 6-2, May 15th 11:35am. Court 2 (Richard Carr Court)

Connor Hipwell was aiming to go back to back to back in Men’s Singles titles, whilst Chris Preston was in his first final after defeating Oscar Willis in the semi finals. Chris started this match as well as he possibly could, hitting lines and not conceding any errors. He raced to a 4-3 lead before Connor could get himself into the match. Connor’s experience showed and he took the first set 6-4 after being outplayed for the majority of the set. The second set was an easier one for him. He eventually started to overpower Chris from the back of the court and took the second set 6-2 to win his 3rd Men’s Singles title. An amazing effort.

Connor Hipwell/Greg Hipwell (1) def. Oscar Willis/Harry Austin (2) 6-4 7-6, May 15th 1:10pm. Court 2 (Richard Carr Court)

Going in, this was forecast to be the closest final of the lot. It certainly was that. Connor Hipwell was going for his 2nd Men’s Doubles title, as was Oscar Willis/Harry Austin. Connor and Greg got off to a good start in what was very windy conditions by this stage of the day. They got out to a 5-1 lead, before Oscar and Harry pegged it back to 5-4. They were broken in that game and the first set went to the Hipwell’s 6-4. The second set was a mirror of the first, with Oscar and Harry playing some quality tennis to get to a 5-3 lead. The Hipwell’s broke back and the set went to a tiebreak. Ultimately the father son duo proved too strong and won the title.

Ray Willis/Glenice Carr (1) def. Geoff Parker/Tanya Parker 6-4 6-1, May 15th 2:45pm. Court 2 (Richard Carr Court)

Ray Willis and Glenice Carr were aiming to win their 2nd Mixed Doubles title in their third straight final, whilst Geoff and Tanya Parker were in their first final together. The match started in a way no one had predicted. Geoff and Tanya were up 4-1 in the blink of an eye playing rock solid tennis and Ray/Glenice were on the ropes. The set from there was quite even but Ray and Glenice managed to reel off 5 straight games to take the first set 6-4. What could have been for the Parkers? Ray and Glenice put the foot down in the 2nd set and won their second title with a 6-1 finish.
